Blowing Up was estabished within the walls of the 17th century House of Detention in Clerkenwell, London by the group of artists who ran it in the late 1990s.

The House of Detention functioned as an underground prison museum in the daytime, and was often ingeniously transformed into a venue for screening videos by artist friends and film-makers by night.

As the word spread, these screenings evolved into popular Blowing Up events within this unique subterranean setting. DJs and comperes were added to the mix.

Sadly in 2000, the House of Detention museum became a victim of the gentrification of Clerkenwell and Blowing Up was evicted from its underground birthplace by zealous property developers.

With an event already scheduled, BU sought refuge round the corner at the Karl Marx Memorial Library, where Perrier comedy award winners Noble and Silver became participating artists and hosts for the evening.

Increasingly popular, Blowing Up has curated and presented more evenings of video shorts and entertainment in London at:
- The Foundry, EC2 (2000)
-
The Buffalo Bar, Highbury (2001)
- Rosemary School, Clerkenwell (2001)
- The Big Chill Festival, Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire (2002)
